Hello and welcome to the St Gothian Sands NR Blog. St Gothian Sands NR is a Cornwall County Council owned reserve and was officially opened in 2005. The reserve was created when the old Sand works at Gwithian closed down leaving some great habitat, attractive to birds. This habitat was enhanced with the creation of a large pool with an island and smaller pools to the north. All the pools are now fenced off creating a safe haven for wildfowl and waders. The reserve is plagued by dog-walkers, many irresponsible, so watch where you're treading and dont mistake a 'poo bag' swinging in a bush for a major rarity!! This blog will hopefully keep you up to date with whats been seen and whats happening on the reserve.
To get to the reserve take the coast road from the double mini-roundabouts at Lidl's supermarket, Hayle and drive through the village of Gwithian to find the reserve on your left as you leave the village. (See HERE for full site guide)
